Daily Vehicle Inspection Checklist
Keep your vehicle safe and legal
In the UK, carrying out a daily walkaround check of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) is mandatory. Although carrying out vehicle checks every 24 hours may seem arduous or even unnecessary, creating a daily vehicle inspection routine ensures not only the safety of yourself and your vehicle but that of other road users too. The FleetGO vehicle inspection sheet has been put together to take the hassle out of the entire process and keep your fleet of trucks in a roadworthy condition.
Daily Vehicle Inspection Checklist for Trucks
Our handy checklist for trucks is available both in digital and print format. It’s clear and easy to follow, making it suitable for various individuals across your business, including drivers, fleet managers and administrative staff. If you are using our Truck Tracking solution, you will be able to use the daily vehicle inspection checklist for trucks within the FleetGO app digitally.
HGV Daily Checks
Each day, before starting their first journey, drivers must thoroughly inspect their vehicle — both inside and out — to ensure that it is safe to drive. In cases where more than one driver is using the same vehicle in a day, the second driver must undertake the same checks.
While performing the necessary checks, drivers must make sure to log all defects that they may find. Should a driver become aware of any defects during their journey, they must find a safe place to stop and record these. Any defects that are considered to be dangerous or pose a risk to other road users should be fixed immediately at the roadside before the driver continues their journey. All defects must be reported in writing to the individual responsible for administrative matters relating to daily vehicle checks within their organisation. Haulage companies are legally required to keep a comprehensive record of all daily walkaround checks.
The police and or the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) are entitled to stop HGVs to perform checks and ensure that drivers are complying with the necessary regulations. They may ask to see a record of your daily walkaround check. In the case where any problems with the vehicle are found, drivers may be prevented from continuing their journey until these are resolved, or issued with a fine.
HGV Daily Walkaround Checks
HGV daily walkaround checks are a fundamental task for drivers and fleet managers in the UK. There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to the order in which drivers should inspect each of the various components, however, we recommend defining a logical routine and following a heavy vehicle daily checklist. For example, drivers may choose to start at the front on the passenger or driver side and work their way around the outside of the vehicle, before moving on to the inside.
Heavy goods vehicles that are well-maintained are beneficial from both a business and safety perspective. They are cheaper to run and more efficient — in other words, they experience less downtime, have greater fuel efficiency, and a longer lifespan among other things. What’s more, keeping your vehicle in the best possible condition makes it’s easier for yourself and other drivers to spot any new defects.
How long does a daily HGV check take?
There is no minimum legal requirement when it comes to the amount of time a driver should spend checking their vehicle each day. On average, a comprehensive inspection should take around fifteen minutes to complete. However, this may vary depending on how familiar the driver is with the vehicle they are inspecting, its size and other such factors. Both the interior and exterior of the vehicle must undergo a thorough check and drivers are advised to take their time while doing so. Haulage companies must provide their staff with the necessary training to ensure that the checks meet the required standard.
